Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 15, 2026

laughmi ("laughmi," "we," "us," or "our") is an AI companion chat mobile app operated by Issac Lee, an individual based in Malaysia, as a sole operator rather than through a registered company. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through the laughmi app (the "Service"), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

By creating an account, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Policy.

1. Age requirement

laughmi is for adults only. You must be 18 years of age or older to create an account. We ask you to confirm your date of birth during onboarding, and your account cannot be used until you do. This is a self-attestation — we do not independently verify your age through government ID or any other means. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will terminate it.

laughmi is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.

2. Information we collect

2.1 Account information

Your email address, used to sign you in (we use passwordless one-time-code sign-in — we do not store a password).

2.2 Profile information

Display name, date of birth (used only for the age gate and never editable afterward), gender, sexual orientation, country, timezone, preferred language, an optional profile photo you upload, and interests you select or enter.

2.3 Companion information

The preferences you provide to be matched with a companion (personality and appearance preferences, relationship-style preferences), and the resulting companion's generated profile (name, bio, personality, and appearance).

2.4 Conversations with your companion

Every message you send and every reply your companion sends is stored so your conversation history and relationship with your companion can persist. Message content is encrypted at rest — it is decrypted only at the moment it is needed to generate a reply or to be displayed back to you, and the encryption key is never stored alongside the data itself.

We want to be direct about one thing: this encryption protects your messages from anyone accessing our database directly. It does not make your messages end-to-end encrypted in the way a messaging app might use that term — our systems necessarily process your message content in order to generate your companion's replies (see Section 3).

2.5 Memories and relationship data

Part of what makes laughmi work is that your companion remembers things about you and your relationship develops over time. To do this, we extract and store discrete "memories" from your conversations (facts you've shared) and a relationship-progression state (how familiar, trusting, and close your companion's relationship model considers you to be). This data is also encrypted at rest, for the same reasons as your messages, and exists specifically to power the companionship experience — it is not used to build an advertising profile of you.

2.6 Photos you send in chat

If you send a photo in a conversation (a laughmi+ feature), it is:

We treat photos you send as more sensitive than text, and the system is built around removing them as soon as they've served their purpose rather than keeping them indefinitely.

2.7 AI-generated images

Your companion's avatar and any photos your companion sends you are generated by an AI image model and stored so they display consistently. These are not photos of a real person.

2.8 Device and notification data

If you enable push notifications, we store a device token so we can deliver them, and your notification preferences (whether push notifications, proactive messages, and relationship-milestone notifications are turned on).

2.9 Usage/analytics data

We record product-analytics events (e.g., that you opened the app, or completed a step in onboarding) together with basic event properties. These events do not include the content of your conversations.

2.10 Subscription and payment data

If you subscribe to laughmi+, our payment platform provider shares with us which product you purchased, its status (active, expired, cancelled), and purchase/renewal timestamps. We do not receive or store your payment card details — those are handled entirely by Apple or Google as your app store.

2.11 Reports you file

If you report a message from your companion, we store the reported message, your stated reason, and the report's resolution.

3. How your information is used, and who it's shared with

3.1 Operating the Service

We use your information to run laughmi: authenticate you, generate your companion's replies, remember your relationship, deliver notifications, process your subscription, and keep the app safe.

3.2 AI sub-processors

To generate your companion's replies and images, your (decrypted) message content and image-generation prompts are sent to third-party AI model providers, accessed through an API routing service (OpenRouter). We select from a range of commercial AI models for this purpose, and which specific model is used may change over time as we improve the product.

We do not authorize these providers to use your conversations to train their general-purpose models.

3.3 Other service providers

We share limited data with the following providers, only as needed to provide their specific function:

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

3.4 Legal and safety

We may disclose information if required by law, or where we believe in good faith it's necessary to protect the safety of a user or the public, or to enforce our Terms of Service.

4. How long we keep your information

Some records may be retained beyond account deletion where we are legally required to (for example, financial/transaction records for tax or accounting purposes), or where they exist only in anonymized/aggregated form that no longer identifies you.

5. Your choices and rights

If you are in a jurisdiction that grants you additional rights over your personal data (such as access, correction, deletion, or portability requests beyond what's built into the app), contact us using the details in Section 8 and we will respond in accordance with applicable law.

6. Safety and content moderation

We use automated scanning (Google Cloud Vision's SafeSearch) to screen photos before they are stored or sent — this scan fails closed, meaning if it can't be completed, the photo is rejected rather than allowed through. You can report any message from your companion; reports are reviewed by our team. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate our Terms of Service.

We also screen new sign-ups against a list of known disposable email domains to reduce abuse.

7. International data transfers

Our infrastructure and service providers may process your information in countries other than your own, including outside Malaysia.

8. Children's privacy

laughmi is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. See Section 1.

9. Contact us

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or how your information is handled, contact us at support@laughmi.com.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
